Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin took a significant step to bolster election security as he signed an executive order on Wednesday that mandates a series of substantial reforms ahead of the November 2024 elections. This initiative emphasizes the use of paper ballots, the tracking of ballot possession during early voting, and a verification process that matches the number of ballots cast with the number of voters checked in. Moreover, absentee ballots will now be issued only upon request, and voters are required to provide identification details such as the last four digits of their Social Security number and birth year for their ballots to be accepted.
Another critical focus of Governor Youngkin’s order is the maintenance and accuracy of the voter rolls. Steps include the removal of individuals who cannot prove residency, deceased voters, and ineligible voters, specifically targeting the prevention of illegal voting. The administration’s dedication to this effort is highlighted by the removal of over 6,000 ineligible voters from the voter rolls and the collaboration between the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Elections to ensure noncitizens do not participate in voting. This coordinated effort shows a multipronged approach to secure the election infrastructure, including the supervision of drop box locations through 24/7 camera surveillance.
This suite of election integrity measures aligns with Virginia’s history of conducting fair and secure elections — an issue that Governor Youngkin insists transcends partisan lines. Despite political shifts in the state, with Democrats controlling both houses of the state Legislature since early this year, the administration’s initiative reflects a bipartisan commitment to upholding the sanctity of the vote. These measures also come at a time when former President Donald Trump shows competitiveness in Virginia, according to recent polls, underscoring the state’s pivotal role in national elections. The integrity and security of Virginia’s elections system, as enhanced by these reforms, are poised to serve as a model for other states navigating the complex landscape of American electoral politics.
