In a remarkable development that could shift the electric vehicle (EV) landscape, Polestar, the electric performance brand and spinoff from Volvo, is setting new standards for EV charging times, potentially overtaking industry giant Tesla in the race for ultra-fast charging technology. Alongside the innovative battery manufacturer StoreDot, Polestar has recently demonstrated a charging capability that significantly shortens the time drivers need to spend at charging stations. Their collaborative effort has resulted in a prototype Polestar 5 sedan achieving a charging milestone: boosting battery levels from 10% to 80% in a mere 10 minutes.

This feat was made possible through the use of a 77 kWh battery developed by StoreDot, which, although smaller in capacity compared to many of today’s EV batteries, showcases the potential for significant advancements in battery technology. StoreDot’s batteries leverage the unique properties of silicon anodes over the traditional graphite, enabling a higher lithium-ion storage capacity within a smaller volume. This feature not only allows for more efficient charging but also hints at longer-lasting battery life and performance. The tests indicate that these silicon-based batteries can be scaled up to capacities of 100 kWh or more, promising greater range without compromising on charging speed.

The demonstration highlighted the Polestar prototype’s ability to handle charging speeds that outpace Tesla’s current Supercharger network capabilities, with charging rates starting at 310 kW and ramping up to 370 kW as the battery approached 80% capacity. This represents a significant leap forward in charging technology, emphasizing the potential reduction of charging times for EVs to become more comparable to the refueling times of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. Such advancements are crucial for addressing the prevalent issue of ‘charging anxiety’ among potential EV owners, thereby making electric vehicles a more practical and appealing option for a broader audience.
