Legendary investor, Charlie Munger, renowned for his role as Warren Buffett’s top advisor at Berkshire Hathaway for nearly five decades, passed away on November 28th, 2023, at the age of 99. His family confirmed the sad news. Besides being an investment giant, Munger was a man of many talents. He was a real estate lawyer, a member of Costco’s board of directors, an unlicensed architect proficient in drafting his own architectural plans and a passionate philanthropist who generously donated tens of millions to various educational institutions, like the University of Michigan.
Known for his value investment approach, Munger had a knack for identifying strong companies with low valuations, a strategy he adopted alongside Buffett. The dynamic duo spent years identifying robust businesses with long-term growth potential while other market players were swayed by the ‘lollipop effect’, a term Munger termed to describe multiple mental biases affecting investor behavior irrationally. Buffett hailed Munger for helping him shift Berkshire’s focus from investing in struggling, cheap businesses to purchasing extremely strong businesses whose fair or relatively affordable prices made them solid investments for the long term. Also, he thought highly of Munger on a personal level, stating that Munger made him a better person.
