A bipartisan group of legislators and senators in the United States has expressed concerns about the role of cryptocurrency in financing terrorism. Led by US Senator Elizabeth Warren, over 100 senators and members of the House of Representatives penned a letter to raise questions about the use of crypto in the terrorist activities of groups such as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The letter, signed by 28 senators and 76 members of the House, was addressed to Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. It refers to a Wall Street Journal article that alleges Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad received donations of over $130 million in cryptocurrency between August 2021 and June 2023, which was used to support their invasion of Israel.
The letter highlights the potential national security threat posed by cryptocurrencies and emphasizes the need for swift action to curb illicit crypto activity. The authors also question whether the White House and President Biden have information on the funding of these terrorist attacks and what measures are being taken to combat crypto-funded terrorism. The letter appeals to Congress to take decisive steps in addressing the use of cryptocurrency for funding terrorism and asks for clarification on the additional resources needed by the US government to effectively combat this threat. Senator Warren, known for her anti-crypto stance, is also working on a bill to regulate the crypto industry. Notably, other prominent signatories in the political landscape have also signed the letter, including Senator Roger Marshall and Representative Sean Casten, who are known for their anti-crypto views.
