Xi and Putin agree to support fairness and justice in their first meeting since the Gaza crisis began.

At the Belt and Road Forum, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered speeches that surprisingly did not mention the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. However, despite their silence on the matter, both Beijing and Moscow have recently shifted their positions to adopt a more critical stance against Israel’s actions.

The omission of the Israel-Hamas war from the leaders’ speeches could be seen as a strategic move to avoid directly interfering in the conflict. Nevertheless, China and Russia’s changing positions indicate a growing concern over Israel’s military actions and a desire to distance themselves from any perceived support for the Israeli government’s approach. This shift aligns with a larger trend in the international community, with countries around the world expressing solidarity with the Palestinian cause and calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Throughout the Belt and Road Forum, the focus was on economic cooperation and infrastructure development, topics that have been at the forefront of China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative. By avoiding mention of the Israel-Hamas conflict, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin aimed to keep the forum focused on their shared vision of global connectivity and economic growth. However, their recent hardening positions against Israel’s actions indicate that the issue remains on their radar, perhaps signaling potential diplomatic moves in the future.
