The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the United States government has taken action against a Mexican drug dealer involved in the importation of the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl using cryptocurrency. The US Treasury announced on September 26 that it has imposed sanctions on 10 individuals, including Mario Alberto Jimenez Castro, who was added to the blacklist through an Ethereum wallet. The individuals have been designated for their involvement in drug trafficking activities, and their assets within the US will be subject to blocking measures.
The Sinaloa Cartel, known for its involvement in the trafficking of illegal drugs, including fentanyl, is responsible for a significant share of these substances illegally entering the US. In addition to the Sinaloa Cartel, the OFAC has blacklisted the head of Colombia’s largest criminal organization, the Clan del Golfo, which is responsible for the majority of the country’s cocaine production.
Fentanyl is an extremely potent painkiller, approximately 50-100 times stronger than morphine, commonly used in the treatment of pain in cancer patients and those recovering from traumatic surgeries. Opioids, including fentanyl, are the leading cause of adult fatalities in the US. In 2021 alone, opioids claimed the lives of 80,411 people.
The US government’s actions aim to disrupt the illicit drug supply chains and save lives. The Department of State has implemented the Narcotic Rewards Program to incentivize the provision of information that could lead to the apprehension or legal prosecution of designated targets. Additionally, the State department is collaborating with a global coalition to strengthen international efforts in combating the manufacturing, trafficking, and dissemination of synthetic narcotics.
