UAW Escalates Stellantis and GM Strikes

President Joe Biden has announced that he will travel to Michigan next week to show his support for the United Auto Workers (UAW) strikes against Ford, General Motors (GM), and Stellantis. The UAW has recently launched a new round of strikes at several GM and Stellantis manufacturing plants, while negotiations with Ford have shown progress, resulting in the union sparing Ford from the strikes. President Biden took to Twitter to share his plans, stating that he will join the picket line in solidarity with the UAW workers as they fight for fair compensation for their contributions to the industry.

The strikes have expanded to include workers from 20 Stellantis auto parts distribution centers and 18 GM facilities across 20 states. However, Ford managed to avoid escalated strikes after meeting some of the UAW’s demands. While agreements with Ford have not been finalized, analysts believe that securing a deal with the company would increase pressure on both GM and Stellantis. The UAW is demanding a 40-percent wage increase over the next four years to account for inflation and recent CEO pay raises, as well as improvements to pensions, shorter workweeks, and an end to tiered wages.
