Court Denies Sam Bankman-Fried Bail

The US Judge overseeing the case of former FTX CEO, Sam Bankman-Fried, has denied his repeated requests for a temporary release from jail to adequately prepare for his upcoming trial. Bankman-Fried, who maintains his not-guilty plea, is scheduled to appear in court in October. In a court filing, Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled that Bankman-Fried did not provide sufficient arguments for the pretrial release request. The judge stated that Bankman-Fried had extensive access to the internet after his initial release on bail before it was revoked. Bankman-Fried’s lawyers had claimed that he was not getting enough access to an internet-enabled laptop in prison, but the judge found these claims to be unsubstantiated.

Despite the denial of his pretrial release, Bankman-Fried’s legal team can still make further requests based on more persuasive grounds. With roughly three weeks left until his trial, Bankman-Fried will remain behind bars until the October hearing. The US government has also released its proposed questions for potential jurors, which include inquiries about their investments with the collapsed exchange, knowledge about the case, and any direct or indirect dealings with FTX, Alameda Research, and associated entities.
