Brazils CBDC Launch Heres When to Expect It

The central bank digital currency (CBDC) issued by Banco Central do Brasil is set to be launched in 2024. Known as DREX, the CBDC aims to improve financial services in the country. Brazil joins other countries such as China, Russia, Japan, Australia, and the United Kingdom in their efforts to introduce a digital currency.

DREX will utilize distributed ledger technology (DLT) to settle wholesale interbank transactions, while retail access will be based on the digital equivalent of existing bank deposits. The coordinator of the digital real, Fabio Araujo, believes that DREX will enhance the domestic financial network by improving access to monetary services and potentially boost investments, lending, and insurance services. Araujo also stated that by enabling simple and reliable access to registered values through DLT technology, costs can be reduced and access to financial services can be democratized.

Notably, prominent finance companies like Mastercard, Sinqia, and the largest cryptocurrency exchange in Brazil, Mercado Libre, have expressed their support for Brazil’s CBDC project. With these partnerships and advancements in digital settlements through platforms like Pix, Brazil’s CBDC is expected to contribute to the country’s financial development.
