Renowned entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk recently took to Twitter to express his thoughts on political issues covered by The New York Times. Despite identifying himself as politically moderate, Musk has engaged in a heated exchange with the newspaper, which is known for its liberal political positions.
The catalyst for Musk’s criticism was an article titled “‘Kill the Boer’ Song Fuels Backlash in South Africa and U.S.” published by The New York Times. In the article, Musk accused the publisher of “openly pushing for genocide of white people in South Africa.”
In response to this accusation, Musk tweeted, “The New York Times actually has the nerve to support calls for genocide! If ever there was a time to cancel that publication, it is now.” Musk also shared a link that allows readers to bypass the Times’ paywall.
However, it is important to note that the article in question was reporting on a political rally in Johannesburg where a leftist party leader chanted “Kill the Boer!” The chant, though controversial, is viewed by some as a symbol of protest rather than a call for violence. Historian Nomalanga Mkhize explains that young people often use the chant to express their discontent, but do not necessarily intend harm.
Despite the context provided by the article, Musk continues to assert that The New York Times supports the genocide of white farmers in South Africa. He has urged his followers to boycott the publication in response to this alleged support.
The New York Times, one of the most prominent newspapers in the United States, boasts approximately 9.7 million print and digital subscribers as of May.
