In a significant escalation of violence, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have launched a large-scale military operation in the West Bank, marking the biggest raid in this region for the past two decades. The operation entered its second day on Thursday, with Israeli military and security forces intensifying their efforts in a notable overnight confrontation at a mosque in the city of Tulkarem. This encounter led to the death of five Palestinian gunmen, according to reports. The operation, encompassing a major assault with fighter jets, drones, and bulldozers, specifically targets the towns of Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas, all of which are known for their sprawling refugee camps. The first day of this significant offensive resulted in the death of at least nine Palestinians, indicating the severe intensity of the ongoing military actions in the region.

The focal point of Thursday’s operation was a mosque in Tulkarem, where Israeli forces engaged in a fierce battle that attracted international criticism, given the exacerbation of the Gaza war into PA-administered West Bank territories. Israeli leadership defended the operation, asserting that intelligence had indicated potential threats of another large-scale terror attack akin to what occurred on Oct. 7, hence justifying their preemptive measures. Israeli forces employed a military tactic known as “pressure cooker,” which involved escalating the volume of fire directed at the mosque to compel the suspects to emerge. This tactic resulted in the use of shoulder-fired missiles, leading to the deaths of two gunmen at the mosque, with additional gunmen killed or captured in adjacent confrontations.

Among those killed in the mosque was Muhammad Jaber, identified as Abu Shuja’a, the commander of the local wing of Islamic Jihad. This operation highlighted the IDF’s strategic approach to combating terror, as authorities also reported the recovery of explosive devices from the site. The ongoing military actions in the West Bank also involve drone strikes on vehicles and coordination with attack helicopters, signifying a comprehensive effort to target militants not just through ground forces but also aerial capabilities. Meanwhile, the overall death toll and the dynamics of conflict in the region underscore the severe human cost of the ongoing violence, with reports of 650 West Bank Palestinians and 27 Israelis, including security personnel, killed since the Gaza war began.

The escalation in the West Bank threatens to undermine efforts toward achieving a Gaza ceasefire deal, particularly as Hamas may view the expansion of military operations as indicative of Israel’s lack of commitment to peace. The comparison of the current violence to the Second Intifada reflects concerns about the potential for further deterioration in the region’s stability. The international community watches closely as events unfold, awaiting any developments that might signal a move towards de-escalation and dialogue, amidst a backdrop of historical conflict and deep-seated grievances on both sides.
