Designated by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in April 2021 for its role in foreign interference in the US presidential election, SouthFront operates under the guidance of the Russian government, specifically the Federal Security Service (FSB). Despite presenting itself as a news source for military enthusiasts, veterans, and conspiracy theorists, SouthFront is meticulous in masking its Russian affiliations. Interestingly, the outlet has leveraged cryptocurrency donations, amassing over $27,000, primarily in Bitcoin, to fund its operations. By advising donors to use personal or unhosted wallets, it aims to slip under the radar of crypto exchanges’ Know Your Customer (KYC) policies.

Apart from Russia, Iran has also been identified as a significant player in cyber influence, expanding its operations to support its geopolitical stance. Through media partners like the Islamic World News (ISWN), linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a concerted effort to propagate pro-Iranian narratives is evident. Just like SouthFront, ISWN seeks donations in various cryptocurrencies, indicating a broader trend of malign actors exploiting digital currencies to finance their operations. As these revelations unfold, the intersection of cryptocurrency and geopolitical cyber warfare prompts a reassessment of how blockchain technology can be safeguarded against misuse, ensuring it remains a force for good rather than a tool for subversion.
