ByteDance, the parent company of the globally popular app TikTok, is reportedly negotiating with Broadcom, a renowned U.S. chip designer, to collaborate on the creation of an advanced 5-nanometer purpose-built AI chip, as per Bloomberg. This move is seen as an effort by ByteDance to secure high-end chips amidst the intensifying technological rivalry between the United States and China. The ongoing discussions have not yet resulted in a finalized deal, but it’s worth noting that Broadcom has already been providing 7nm legacy AI processors to ByteDance, which are utilized within the Chinese company’s data center operations.
The potential collaboration comes against the backdrop of the U.S. imposing stringent export controls on chip technology to China, marking a significant hurdle for Chinese companies in acquiring cutting-edge semiconductor technology. This makes the partnership with Broadcom particularly crucial for ByteDance as it ensures access to advance chip technology while navigating the challenging geopolitical landscape. Moreover, Reuters has reported that the development of the 5nm chip will be in compliance with U.S. export restrictions, with the manufacturing outsourced to the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC).
