Ukraine Peace Summit’s Final Declaration Suspected of Plagiarizing China’s Plan

The recent peace summit held in Switzerland aimed at discussing solutions for the Ukraine conflict, which included Ukrainian President Zelensky and representatives from nearly 100 countries, has been criticized by the Kremlin for producing “zero” results, in the absence of both Russian and Chinese delegates. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized the futility of such discussions without Russia’s presence and reiterated Russian President Vladimir Putin’s openness to dialogue. The final document of the summit, endorsed by 78 participating countries, highlighted the preservation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity as indispensable for any peace agreement.

Interestingly, analysts and observers have highlighted striking similarities between the summit’s final communiqué and China’s previously proposed peace plan. Astute geopolitical analyst Arnaud Bertrand made a notable comparison, revealing that six of the twelve points in the summit’s document were directly aligned with proposals from China’s peace plan, introduced in February 2023. This revelation has sparked discussions on the influence and potential alignment of these peace initiatives, undermining the summit’s originality and casting a shadow on its diplomatic integrity.

Suspicion and intrigue deepen as it emerges that China, prior to the Swiss summit, had been promoting an alternative solution to the conflict, subtly sidestepping the global meeting in Switzerland in a move described by a diplomat as a “subtle boycott”. This maneuver by China hints at its intricate diplomatic dance and its ambition to embed its version of peace in the international discourse, challenging the consensus reached in Switzerland. The strong resemblance between the two peace declarations has led commentators like Cyrus Jansen to humorously criticize the apparent lack of effort in disguising the similarities, while some view China’s actions as an attempt to play a central role in the peace process, potentially at the expense of undermining Ukraine’s prospects for an unbiased agreement.
