Musk’s critical stance emerged in response to a discussion on his social media platform, X, where a user criticized Scott’s charitable foundation, Yield Giving, for its focus on addressing issues related to race and gender. This user described Yield Giving’s efforts as aligning with what they believe to be the most detrimental elements within the United States, labeling the fund, somewhat derisively, as “The AWFL Fund.”
Musk’s reaction further fueled the debate by suggesting that the actions of “super rich ex-wives who hate their former spouse” could be counted among the reasons for the decline of Western civilization. This statement joins a series of controversial remarks Musk has made about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which he has openly criticized in the past. In early January, Musk took to Twitter to express his disdain for DEI, equating it to a form of racism and calling for its termination. Moreover, under Musk’s leadership, Tesla has recently made headlines by removing DEI-related language from an official filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, eliminating a reference to the company having a “majority-minority workforce” and its support for employee resource groups.
Contrasting sharply with Musk’s viewpoint, MacKenzie Scott has devoted herself to philanthropy since her divorce from Bezos in 2019. Upon signing the Giving Pledge—in which billionaires promise to donate the majority of their wealth to charitable causes—Scott has been proactive in disbursing her fortune, with a notable emphasis on DEI efforts. Reports highlight that in just one year, Scott donated $567 million to racial equity organizations, underscoring her commitment to fostering inclusivity and addressing systemic inequalities. Her philanthropic strategy, characterized by substantial annual donations, illustrates a dedicated effort to effect positive change in society, challenging Musk’s critical perspective on DEI-focused philanthropy.
