Avalanche Faces Similar Outage Problems to Solana, Impacting AVAX’s Price

On Friday, the layer 1 blockchain, Avalanche, experienced a significant disruption, leading to a network shutdown that lasted over five hours. This interruption caused a temporary halt in block production, sparking discussions and concerns within the cryptocurrency community. Some members drew parallels between this outage and the series of disruptions previously experienced by Solana, another prominent blockchain project. The outage’s cause was initially attributed by Kevin Sekniqi, co-founder of Ava Labs, to a “new inscription wave,” but further investigations revealed that the issue was rooted in code rather than performance. Specifically, a bug related to gossip-related mempool management caused nodes to max out CPU usage due to excessive gossiping.

The Avalanche team responded swiftly to the outage, identifying the cause as “buggy logic” that led to unnecessary transaction gossip among nodes. By updating the software to disable the problematic logic introduced in the version 1.10.18 update, the team managed to resolve the issue. Despite the interruption, Avalanche’s outage marks its first significant network trouble since its launch in September 2020. In contrast, analysts note that while Solana’s repeated outages have stemmed from its inability to handle high loads, Avalanche’s recent hiccup was due to a bug introduced during an upgrade, suggesting no inherent performance issues with the blockchain itself. Meanwhile, the AVAX token faced a notable market correction, with prices falling nearly 10% over the past week amid a mix of token unlocks and network instability. Nonetheless, interest in Avalanche remains strong among crypto traders and investors, buoyed by its adoption by major institutions and the blockchain’s underlying potential for long-term growth.
