A few weeks back, Mark Zuckerberg gave the world a glimpse of his secretive project — a doomsday bunker located in Hawaii — via a post on Instagram. The video showed his wife going down an elevator and emerging into a theater where Zuckerberg was seen gaming. The innocuous post might have been a strategic move by the world’s fifth wealthiest man, as per Bloomberg Billionaires Index, to generate some positive buzz about the expansive secret estate he’s developing in Hawaii.

The Meta Platforms CEO bought the first 700 acres of land in Kauai, Hawaii’s smallest and oldest main island, in 2014, but no one, perhaps not even Zuckerberg himself, envisioned what the complex would blossom into. The construction journey has been fraught with difficulties, straining his rapport with the locals, many of whom are indigenous Hawaiians with generations-old roots on the island. Despite the 6-foot wall, armed security, and non-disclosure agreements for the workers, the media has managed to gather some details about the 1,400-acre estate, currently known as Koolau Ranch. The estate is estimated to have cost the tech mogul a whopping $270 million.

However, at the heart of the property is a 5,000-square-foot underground bunker that is presently under construction and is generating significant interest on social media. According to building plans, the bunker’s door will be robust, made of metal and concrete. This bunker will be self-sustained, equipped with a gigantic water tank. Zuckerberg isn’t the only one constructing such luxury bunkers; Rising S Company, a Texas-based firm, reported a 700% increase in custom high-end underground bunkers sales in 2016 compared to 2015. Even Rap celebrity Rick Ross shared his plans for a private bunker on social media, creating quite a buzz. Safe to say, the ‘doomsday prepping’ trend is a growing fascination among the elite and wealthy.
