Tesla, the electric vehicle and renewable energy innovator, is investing over $500 million to develop a Dojo supercomputer at its Gigafactory, located in New York. The announcement was made during a briefing on state expenditures by Governor Kathy Hochul. The factory in Buffalo is set to house Tesla’s advanced Dojo Supercomputing cluster. Governor Hochul expressed her excitement about the roll-out, stating that this half-a-billion-dollar investment will be a significant addition to the state’s economic growth.
In addition to the supercomputer to be built by Tesla, a separately-run artificial intelligence supercomputer is planned for construction at the State University of New York. Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, confirmed the future development of the supercomputing cluster, clarifying that while $500 million is allocated for a smaller Nvidia system, it’s just a fraction of what the competitiveness in AI market demands, in terms of yearly investment. The Gigafactory currently manufactures Tesla’s superchargers, solar panels, and roofs, with a team also dedicated to autonomous data analysis. The time frame for developing the supercomputer remains undisclosed at this time.
