The biometric ID and digital wallet project Worldcoin is rethinking the design of its Iris Scanning Orb device. Currently, the Orb scans the irises of users to verify their personhood for the blockchain-based project. Alex Blania, CEO of Tools for Humanity, the parent company of Worldcoin, indicated that the existing design is considered polarizing. Some individuals find it appealing while others troublesome due to its futuristic, sci-fi-inspired look. Primed to be remodeled in a more user-friendly and less divisive approach, the next edition of the Orb is considered to be more akin to an “Apple product”.
Blania joined the company nearly four years ago, admitting that the current Orb design was conceived prior to his involvement. Aiming to soften the appearance of the device and incorporate personalization features, Blania plans an upgrade set for release in the first half of 2024. Despite the specific release date remaining unannounced, the revamped Orb has already undergone field testing. Launched officially in June, the Worldcoin project has rapidly expanded its user base. Currently, it boasts over three million distinct users spread across 120 nations, with nearly 190,000 new signups recorded in just a week.
