In a reversal of an earlier decision, two Estonian citizens, suspected of fraud related to cryptocurrency, are now set to be extradited to the United States for trial. This development comes after initial denial by the Estonian circuit court, with the local government now approving the extradition for a second time. The suspects, Ivan Turogin and Sergei Potapenko, are alleged to have run a fraudulent cryptocurrency service, swindling victims out of more than $500 million.

Turogin and Potapenko reportedly operated a pseudo cryptocurrency mining enterprise called ‘HashFlare’ and a virtual bank, known as ‘Polybius’. According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), these operations were nothing more than a Ponzi scheme. The suspects managed to accrue a staggering $575 million from their victims, a sum they later laundered via shell corporations, which were then used to purchase real estate and luxury vehicles. After a November 2022 arrest, the pair were slapped with charges including 16 counts of wire fraud and a single count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. Given the approval for their extradition, if they’re found guilty, Turogin and Potapenko could face up to 20 years in prison.
