A significant security breach impacted mobile gaming platform GAMEE, leading to an unauthorized exploitation of the GMEE token contracts on Polygon, resulting in the theft of roughly 600 million GMEE tokens. This incident, which ignited a wave of uncertainty within the crypto community, led to a sudden and steep depreciation in the value of the token, causing panic among investors and users of the platform.
Following the exploit, GAMEE confirmed the situation via their official social media account, advising users to temporarily refrain from all GMEE token-related activities as they investigated the security mishap. It is established that GMEE tokens serve as an ERC-20 utility token within the GAMEE ecosystem, granting users accessibility, action capabilities, and governance within the platform’s operations. The compromisation of these tokens via unauthorized access to the platform’s GitLab, resulted in a theft that is estimated to be roughly $15.28 million. Immediately after obtaining the tokens, the culprit converted them into ETH and MATIC and traded them on various DeFi platforms.
In the aftermath of this incident, GAMEE reassured their users that protective measures have been put in place to secure the remaining token contracts. The token contract ownership and all associated contracts have been transferred to a ‘new secure address’. The team clarified that only the reserves belonging to the proprietary team were affected, assuring users that the community-owned assets were not compromised as GAMEE does not manage or custody those assets. Moving forward, GAMEE plans on identifying and supporting affected users while providing regular updates to maintain transparent communication. Despite the mitigation initiatives, the GMEE token price decreased by 31.5% in just 24 hours, a slump expected to have significant effects on the platform’s economy.
