In an atypical missive dispatched to the federal court on January 10, a different kind of sentence was proposed for Sam Bankman-Fried, the ex-founder and erstwhile CEO of FTX. The uncommon proposition came from Mary McKee who hails from Minnetonka, Minnesota. She doesn’t share any form of relationship with the accused, yet observed and proposed that he could be suffering from Autism and a prison sentence wouldn’t serve as a beneficial deterrent to anyone.

McKee elaborated her perspectives with a comparison that a murder convict receives a less severe punishment than what Bankman-Fried might be facing. Following the outline from a 2021 US Department of Justice bulletin, the median duration for a murder convict in prison is around 17.5 years before a possible release, whereas Bankman-Fried could be facing a sentence of up to 110 years or as less as 30 years. She further proposed that instead of handing him such lengthy sentences, Bankman-Fried’s innate talents could be put to fruitful use by having him instruct a high school math course. She foresaw a value in his aptitude that could potentially help develop future generations.
