CoinGecko’s analysis uncovers remarkable growth in cryptocurrency airdrops from 2020 to 2023, distributing an astounding $26.6 billion in tokens. Airdrops from powerful players such as Uniswap, Apecoin, and dYdX led this significant increase. An unforgettable moment was Uniswap’s distribution, now deemed a foundation of the DeFi (Decentralized Finance) Summer, worth a staggering $6.43 billion calculated at its peak token price. This monumental airdrop revived the cryptocurrency model first initiated with Auroracoin in 2014 and spurred renewed interest in DeFi platforms.
Apecoin followed closely with the second-largest airdrop of $3.54 billion worth of tokens, a significant move for Yuga Labs ecosystem participants. This essentially meant a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT gifted without charge based on its floor price during that time. Meanwhile, dYdX administered $2 billion worth of tokens, subject to a five-year vesting period. The examination further reveals the ascent and evolution of airdrops, with 18 of the highest 50 occurring in 2021, a significant step up from the five noted in 2020. This trend, however, declined in 2022 and 2023, likely due to a prevailing crypto winter.
