Martin Shkreli, famously known as Pharma Bro, shifted his focus to the current circumstances of Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, the ex-CEO of Binance, as the latter confessed to money laundering crimes as part of a whopping $4.3 billion settlement. Shkreli casually stated, “Jail isn’t that bad,” forecasting that CZ may have to endure up to one year in prison or perhaps receive probation. Shkreli is widely recognized as Pharma Bro due to his strong affiliations with the pharmaceutical industry. He drew attention to the scenario involving CZ and the potential for a jail sentence.
Shkreli himself served a seven-year term on charges of securities deceit and conspiracy. He communicated to CZ in no uncertain terms that prison life isn’t as grim as it’s painted and speculated on the possible sentence that CZ might receive as per his plea bargain. CZ admitted guilt to serious crimes related to the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), with the Department of Justice (DOJ) asserting that he had breached a federal statute that mandates financial institutions to safeguard against money laundering and funding terrorist activities.
The New York Times suggests that, as per federal guidelines for sentencing, CZ could face up to 18 months of imprisonment, although the prosecutors are leaving the door open for a harsher penalty. If CZ’s punishment runs for less than 18 months, his agreement includes a waiver of his right to appeal. Shkreli gave a detailed explanation of this issue and highlighted that if CZ was punished under the BSA, he may receive probation or a 1-year sentence. This could prove to be a fair deal for CZ, considering the consequences of being charged under Title 18, section 1956, which includes longer sentences and substantial fines.
