Martin Shkreli, better known in the media as ‘Pharma Bro’, has recently aimed some commentary towards Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, the former CEO of Binance. Zhao recently issued a guilty plea to money laundering charges as part of a staggering $4.3 billion settlement. He now awaits sentencing. Drawing from his own experience of serving seven years in prison on charges of securities fraud and conspiracy, Shkreli offered his thoughts, assuring Zhao that “jail ain’t so bad,” and speculated that that CZ could serve up to a year in jail or receive probation.
Zhao’s guilty plea pertains to felony charges tied to violations of the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). The Department of Justice (DOJ) has claimed that Zhao violated federal laws that mandate financial institutions to guard against money laundering and terrorist financing. Federal sentencing guidelines suggest that Zhao could face a prison term of up to 18 months, However, prosecutors have not closed the door on the potential of requesting a harsher sentence. If Zhao is handed a sentence lower than 18 months, his plea deal prohibits him from appealing.
Shkreli detailed his analysis of Zhao’s situation, suggesting that if a BSA violation is his primary charge, Zhao could receive between probation to one year, a favorable outcome in his view given he would avoid a title 18, chapter 1956 charge. He further commented on the bigger picture surrounding the DOJ’s case against Zhao. In his view, the case heavily underlines the formidable reach and influence of the U.S. Government to assert control, even in the realm of decentralized digital currencies, thereby demonstrating their power “to shake you down whenever they feel like it.” Shkreli has previously engaged in similar conversations with significant figures in the cryptocurrency domain, sharing insights derived from his own incarceration. His comments have sparked discussions about the efficacy and exertion of governmental power, particularly in the world of cryptocurrency.
