Greece’s ex-Finance Minister, Yanis Varoufakis, has contended that Javier Milei, Argentina’s incoming president, does not subscribe to anarcho-capitalist views. Varoufakis goes as far as comparing Milei’s intended anti-inflation strategy, dollarization, to the extreme of eradicating a virus by obliterating a nation. Far from being a libertarian as many would like to believe, he deems Milei to be a reincarnation of another Videla, the Argentinian military dictator from 1976 to 1981, only this time cloaked as a libertarian.

Varoufakis, who helmed Greece’s debt renegotiation talks with the European Central Bank (ECB) in 2015, gave these comments following reports of Milei’s proposed plans to dismantle Argentina’s central bank. Alongside doing away with the central bank, it is rumored that Milei intends to privatize the state-owned energy company, YPF, as well as relinquish all public broadcasting networks. These seemingly radical solutions to the issues plaguing Argentina have sparked interest among bitcoin and crypto proponents globally. Milei’s past statements praising crypto assets have also defined him as a favorite within the Bitcoin community. However, Varoufakis, in a post on X (previously Twitter), negated the idea of Milei behaving as an anarcho-capitalist, instead proffering American philosopher and author Robert Nozick as the true representative of anarcho-capitalism.
