The Turkish Lira (TRY) emerged as the dominant fiat trading pair on the Binance crypto exchange in September. Despite being the fourth-largest crypto market globally, the TRY accounted for 75% of all fiat volume in early September, surpassing the transaction volumes of the United States, India, and the United Kingdom. This surge in TRY trading can be attributed to the recent influx of crypto investors in the Turkish market. According to research conducted by Binance, 27% of participants started their crypto investment journey within the last year, and 8% joined within the last six months.
The motivations behind Turkey’s growing interest in crypto are multifaceted. Firstly, the profitability factor is a major driving force, with Turkish investors seeking investment opportunities with high returns. Additionally, the ease of monitoring, absence of minimum thresholds, and low transaction costs are appealing features for new investors. However, the inherent risks associated with cryptocurrencies contribute to a certain level of reluctance among Turkish investors. Nonetheless, crypto adoption in Turkey has been steadily increasing over the past three years, rising from 16% to 40%. The country currently ranks 12th on Chainalysis’ Global Crypto Adoption Index 2023, a testament to its growing crypto market. However, in an effort to appease the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and be removed from its “gray list,” Turkey is reportedly drafting new regulations to govern crypto assets. These regulations aim to address the standards set by the FATF that Turkey had not previously adhered to. By implementing a comprehensive crypto assets law, Turkey hopes to solidify its position as a robust and compliant player in the cryptocurrency space.
