UAW Reaches Deal with Mack Trucks

The United Autoworkers’ Union has reached an agreement with Mack Trucks, which is owned by Volvo, to avoid a separate round of strikes. This comes as the union’s strike action against the Big 3 automakers – Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis – enters its third week. The UAW had previously voted to authorize strikes against Mack Trucks, but last Thursday, they reached bargaining terms that led to a tentative agreement. However, the deal still needs to be ratified by union members. If approved, the agreement will provide higher wages and continued benefits for Mack employees and their families.

Meanwhile, the ongoing strike against the Big 3 automakers shows no signs of resolution. UAW president Shawn Fain has authorized pickets and stoppages at plants in Lansing, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois, bringing the total number of striking workers to around 25,000. The relationship between Fain and the company executives has become increasingly bitter. GM CEO Mary Bara criticized the union, stating that they were calling for strikes for the sake of headlines and not to make real progress. Similar sentiments were expressed by Ford CEO Jim Farley, who accused the union of trying to hold automakers “hostage.” Despite the stalemate, Fain remains determined to fight for a fair agreement, stating that there is progress but it’s not enough, and they will continue pushing until they achieve their goals.
