Ripple Cancels Fortress Trust Acquisition

Blockchain firm Ripple has decided to cancel its plan to acquire Fortress Trust, marking a significant change in direction from its original intention. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse announced the news on Twitter, stating that while they will not proceed with the outright acquisition, Ripple will still remain an investor in Fortress Trust’s parent company, Fortress Blockchain Technologies. Garlinghouse praised the talent of the Fortress team and expressed a desire to continue supporting them and potentially collaborate in the future.

The relationship between Ripple and Fortress dates back to 2022 when Ripple became a minority investor in the company. Ripple’s initial plan to acquire Fortress Trust was part of its strategy to expand its regulatory licenses, as Fortress holds a Nevada Trust license. However, a security breach involving one of Fortress’ vendors and affecting four clients occurred just a day before the acquisition plans. Ripple stepped in to compensate the affected customers as part of the deal. Despite the cancellation of the acquisition, Ripple’s financial support and investment in Fortress’ parent company signify their continued involvement in the partnership.
