SpaceX has received its first government contract for the Starshield division of its Starlink satellite internet network. The U.S. Space Force spokesperson stated that SpaceX was awarded a year-long contract on September 1, with a maximum value of $70 million. As part of the contract, SpaceX is required to provide services to support mission partners across various branches of the Department of Defense and will receive $15 million by September 30.
Starshield, an expansion of SpaceX’s Starlink network, is dedicated to government and military use. The program focuses on Earth observation, global communications, and hosted payloads. It offers enhanced security measures to ensure the protection and secure processing of data. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk emphasized the importance of Starlink being a civilian network, stating that Starshield will be owned and controlled by the U.S. government’s Department of Defense Space Force.
