Judge Limits Bankman-Fried Trial Arguments, Allows Drug Use Questions

A federal judge has issued rulings ahead of the criminal fraud trial of Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX cryptocurrency exchange. The judge has granted some of the prosecutors’ requests to limit certain defense strategies and evidence. Bankman-Fried’s lawyers are not allowed to mention his pretrial detention or discuss his family and personal life in front of the jury. Additionally, arguments about FTX customers’ negligence or Bankman-Fried’s intent to repay allegedly stolen funds are deemed irrelevant or unfairly prejudicial. However, the defense is permitted to question witnesses about their past recreational drug use, as long as they notify the judge and prosecutors beforehand.

The rulings came in response to requests from both the prosecutors and defense to restrict arguments and evidence at the trial. Bankman-Fried has been charged with defrauding investors and looting customer deposits on FTX, resulting in billions of dollars in losses. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial is scheduled to begin in October, with jury selection set for October 3, 2023.
