Gary Gensler Warns of AI Use by Financial Advisors

SEC Chair Gary Gensler has raised concerns about financial advisors prioritizing their own interests over those of their clients due to the use of artificial intelligence (AI). In his prepared testimony, Gensler highlighted the potential conflicts of interest that can arise when financial advisory firms utilize AI predictive analytics tools. He emphasized the need for firms to disclose situations where their optimization function takes their own interests into consideration, potentially compromising the interests of investors. Gensler urged firms to make efforts to eliminate or neutralize these conflicts and report on them transparently.

Despite these concerns, Gensler maintains an optimistic outlook on the adoption of AI in the financial sector. He believes that AI and predictive analytics have the potential to bring greater financial inclusion and enhance the user experience. However, he will be addressing these issues in his upcoming testimony before the US House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services on September 27.

The concerns raised by Gensler highlight the need for transparency and ethical practices when utilizing AI in the financial industry. It is crucial for financial advisors to prioritize the interests of their clients and avoid conflicts of interest. By addressing these issues and implementing appropriate measures, the industry can reap the benefits of AI while ensuring the protection of investors’ interests.
