Argentina Launches Investigation Into Worldcoins Handling of Personal Data

The government of Argentina has announced that it is launching an investigation into the data collection activities of Worldcoin within the country. The Public Information Access Agency (AAIP), which is responsible for data regulation in Argentina, sent a letter to the Worldcoin Foundation requesting information about how the personal data of Wordcoin users is being treated.

The probe follows a legal complaint filed by Daniel Monastersky, a partner at Data Governance Latam, citing possible violations of the Personal Data Protection Act and non-compliance with regards to the handling of biometric data collected by Worldcoin. The government has stated that if any issues are found during the investigation, they will take appropriate steps to address them and ensure that Worldcoin complies with security and privacy standards. The AAIP has specified that Worldcoin must adhere to the procedures outlined in the Personal Data Protection Act, which includes registering with the institution, providing information about data treatment policies, stating the purpose for data collection, and outlining the retention period for this information. Additionally, Worldcoin is required to provide details about the safety and confidentiality measures in place to protect the personal information of Argentine citizens.

Worldcoin has faced opposition in several countries due to its intrusive data requirements, such as iris scanning for identity verification. Argentina is the latest country to probe the operations of the Worldcoin Foundation, joining others including France and Bavaria, which are also investigating data treatment practices. In Kenya, Worldcoin’s verification operations have been suspended since August 2, and the police recently raided Worldcoin offices, seizing devices used to store user data.
