South Africa, the host of this year’s BRICS summit, has announced that 23 countries have officially applied to become members of the economic bloc. In addition, 67 leaders and 20 representatives of major organizations have been invited to attend the summit. Notably, French President Emmanuel Macron has not received an invitation.
The BRICS summit is scheduled to take place from August 22nd to 24th in Johannesburg. South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, along with the leaders of China, Brazil, and India, are expected to be in attendance. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be attending in person.
According to South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, the 23 countries that have applied for BRICS membership include Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Venezuela, Vietnam, Cuba, Honduras, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Morocco, Nigeria, State of Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia.
Pandor noted that at the summit, a special report on the principles of expanding the association and a list of countries interested in joining the economic bloc will be presented to the leaders of the BRICS countries. The final decision on expanding the organization will be made by the leaders themselves.
As for the attendees, South Africa’s President Ramaphosa has invited 67 leaders from countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Caribbean. Additionally, representatives from 20 major international organizations have been invited, including the United Nations, the African Union Commission, and the BRICS Bank. Notably, French President Emmanuel Macron did not receive an invitation despite expressing interest in attending.
It remains to be seen how the BRICS summit will shape the future of the economic bloc with the potential addition of new member countries. The expansion model and criteria for joining will be key topics of discussion among the leaders in attendance.
