Venezuela Presents Official Request to Join BRICS

The government of Venezuela has officially applied to join the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) bloc. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro expressed his hope for a positive reception of the proposal by the nations already part of the bloc. Maduro stated that Venezuela’s aim is to learn, support, and actively contribute to the growth and vision of the BRICS bloc.

Maduro, during his weekly TV program “Con Maduro Mas,” announced that the government had already presented the official application to join BRICS. He commended the role of the BRICS bloc in the international geopolitical arena, referring to it as “the driving force behind the emergence of the multipolar world.”

Delcy Rodriguez, vice president of Venezuela, explained that their application represents a step toward developing new ways of economic cooperation, moving away from unilateral hegemony. It is anticipated that BRICS will consider the inclusion of new members in the upcoming summit scheduled to take place in South Africa later this month.

Venezuela’s interest in joining the BRICS bloc was previously disclosed by President Maduro during an official visit to Brazil in May. The intention was supported by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio ‘Lula’ da Silva, who stated that he favored Venezuela’s membership in BRICS. China and Russia have also shown positive responses to Venezuela’s interest, welcoming the integration of more partners into the BRICS family.

In July, Belarus also applied to join the bloc, and several other states have presented formal requests to be part of BRICS.
